My Bats have failed to return...

Every year a colony of about a hundred bats return to roost behind my shutters. We checked them as best we could last year, to see if any had 'white nose syndrome', which has been killing bats by the thousands, and they all seemed clean.

Sadly, all but three, have failed to return.

Is there something significant about the bats to Native culture?

Or are you just a creepy Mother-F'er like me?

Seriously though. Bats are awesome for keeping insects down.

Do you know where they winter? I know if its southern us/gulf area with the oil slick and other issues down there right now the winter may have been difficult.

Bats are not birds, they are mammals. Some may migrate to a cave or something, but most just find a place to hibernate like a barn or an attic.

I knew that but for some reason assumed they migrated.

they're just really good at keeping the bug population under control. And I think they're cute.

My guess is they gather in the Niagara peninsula in some cave.

    I love bats!
I have some that have taken up residence at my front door though. Somewhere over the light fixture. Hubby said he saw them.
I think I need a bat box. I'd rather them in a bat box then greeting guests at the front door.

The bats at our place like sports better than insects. They're baseball bats. *groan*

This is why the one that lives in my garage is allowed to stay......no bugs in the summer. :)

While he doesn't bug me per se.......he has dive bombed a few times when I turn the garage light on,mainly cause I blind the poor thing without thinking about it.
