Nothing new, I got a question

Any body out there familar with Dell laptop XPS -1710?
My son blew the video card on his & says Dell does not offer it as a user install spare part.
I was wondering if anyone had an idea of who the card manufacturer is, whether it is avaiable & where I could get it.

Most often the video card is integrated on the system board in laptops. I think Toshiba is one of the exceptions, but Dell likely integrates because it's cheaper.

That'll learn ya for buying Dell!

I think the Dell XPS uses a Nvidia 7900 or 7400 card for graphics. If it does have a removable card (and they are generally a pain in the ass to change... therefore the "not user changeable" from Dell). Your best bet is probably EBay. If it will fit, you might even be able to go to a less expensive Nvidia 6400. I think the 7400 and 7900 cards are around $150 - $250. The 6400 (while not as fast/capable) is generally much cheaper ($50 range).

My only other question would be... are you sure it's the video card and not the LCD screen? Have you tried to run a spare monitor from the VGA port on the laptop to verify there is no signal?

    BTW - good luck.

    OOooohhh....Dell!

Whatever you do....DO NOT buy a new card through them, they will rape you blind.

On the plus side though, when my hard drive puked back in September, the guy who put a new one in told me all Dell parts are basically interchangable with other brands. So,call up your local computer repair place and ask them about it.

That is if they'll even touch a Dell, alot of places in my area won't.

    Oh, I see.

Durka is the master of computer hardware... and I am just a moldy and cheap imitation.

It's OK, I'm old. Therefore I know nothing about computers and their repair. I get it.

I think I'll get out my slide rule and do a few interpolations. No wait... I can't use a slide rule, only this abacus... damn, I can't find it anymore... I'll just use my slate rock on the cave wall. I hope the Velociraptors don't attack me like they did last time I tried to do some drawings.

    OK.

But only because it is you. By the way, grats on the new little lassie. I hope you and yours had a wonderful Christmas.

i've found the best way to shop for parts is to run searches on the part number....and of course, researching the supplier to see if they're morons shipping the wrong parts out on a regular basis.
