Cable Box PVR transfer

Okay here's the skinny. I have a PVR Cable Box HD from my local cable company. A friend of mine said he rigged his up so that he is able to extract shows he has recorded from the PVR's Harddrive. As there are a couple of good HBO specials coming up I would like to see if I can import the recorded shows into my hard drive and burn them for personal viewing.

The guy who told me this is out of country, but he was pretty adamant that he did it.

No reason to doubt him.

The PVR is a Motorola.

Anyone done this?

I don't know but I'm guessing the PVR probably has it's own Audio/video proprietary format...
