Ive ridden out many a tornado, but nothing (thankfully) like this. I do remember vividly the outbreak in 1974 in Ohio that pretty much destroyed the town of Xenia

    1974: Xenia Tornado

In NC in the early 1990s there was a small tornado that put a tree branch through the wall of my bathroom. A few years later in WV the grocery store I worked at took some damage from one--it was relatively minor and we were all ok (largely because we knew what to do) but it took out the front of the store as well as the signs for businesses nearby.

If you find yourself near one, don't be caught up in the wonder of it. Get to a safe spot--under ground if possible, but if not then find a ground floor bathtub or at the very least an indoor hallway with no windows. These things are extremely unpredictable and very, very dangerous. If you are in a car, you need to pull under an overpass and get OUT of the car, lay in a ditch, and wait it out. Getting dirty and wet is far better than getting dead. Tornadoes WILL pick cars up and toss them.

Hurricanes are completely different and far less dangerous really. Use caution though, as there are often tornadoes spawned by hurricanes. Ive been through more than my share of hurricanes as well.

Man, those poor folks. Thanks Coddy.

On the upside [if there is one] CNN can finally shut up about Bin Laden.

... has been around as long as I remember. Some of the most extreme winters in SK we had were in the early 70s and extreme summers also from that time.

2005 was extreme for hurricanes. Pretty quiet since. One thing about weather is it will always be unpredictable and sometimes extreme.

    Thanks guys!

I'll be honest. I have never been hit by a tornado, (*knocks on wood*), but my area was hit by the Barrie tornado in 1985...

Unfortunately, in the future it's likely going to be more difficult to forecast hurricane seasons, and far more concerning, it will be more difficult to produce accurate warnings for those who live in hurricane prone areas.

As Big Hurricane Season Looms, NOAA Chief Calls Satellite Cuts a "Disaster": Scientific American

The worst part of all, is that to compensate for poor accuracy, the area for a warning has to increase, which makes it more likely in the future for people to ignore the warnings in the first place. A shame really.
If I told you my printing was this good, would you believe me?
