Pat Robertson blamed the Devil for Hatai's problems. Danny Glover blamed Gaia who is pissed because not enough has been done to counteract Global Warming.

Who would you rather have pissed at you, the Devil or Mother Earth?

He's delutional. That IS reality for some of us Frogger. And not just by a little bit.

Robertson is not blaming today's Hatians for the earthquake. He is blaming the devil and he is not referring to the Pact With The Devil without at least some historical reasons.

According to official Hatian history a ceremony took place on August 14th, 1791 at a place called Bwa Kayiman (Bois Caiman in French Creole) known as the Boukman Contract. During this ceremony a slave named Boukman sacrificed a pig and those in attendance drank the blood of the pig calling on the both Kongo and Creole spirits to come to their aid.

This is the pact with the devil that Pat Robertson is referring to. He is not alone in believing that the Hatains should turn from their Voodoo worship because it is a perversion of religion and calls on evil spirits through blood rites.

You may disagree with Robertson but that doesn't mean he made up the Pact With The Devil out of whole cloth. He is merely agreeing with Hatian history. In fact, there is still a statue of a pig in Port Au Prince commemorating the Boukman Contract. That is, unless it was destroyed in the recent earthquake.

While I don't agree with Robertson I can at least understand why he said what he did.
That's a fascinating piece of history, but how do you know this incident was what Robertson was referring to?

Even if it was the incident in Robertson's mind when he made his bizarre remark, it makes little sense. The ceremony you cited took place in 1791. The ceremony was a promise by the participants that the gods/spirits would get 200 years of faithful service from the island's inhabitants if the islanders received divine aid to gain their independence. They got their independence in 1804, so either way you do the numbers their "pact with the devil" ended at least 5 years ago. I also wonder why Robertson is worried about the efficacy of Voodoo ceremonies. If those doll thingies worked he'd have been in a wheelchair for years now. ;)
