    What Have You Been Watching...

Just like the reading thread, I've been watching a few films here and there in my spare time as well.

The ones that I can come up with are...

The Maltese Falcon (1942) - Good little film noir.

The Treasure of Sierra Madre (1949) - Fine, and can understand why it's a classic, but not my cup of tea.

Key Largo (1949) - Just like the Treasure.

The Asphalt Jungle (1950) - Same with Treasure.

The African Queen (1951) - A wonderful romantic comedy.

Psycho (1960) - What a ride! Didn't think I would enjoy it since you know what happens in it but it still got me!

The Mackintosh Man (1973) - IMO, poor man's Bond. Loved the music, though...and Mrs. Smith. Mmm! (Hell, with all of the John Huston films that I've seen, aside from the ones that aren't which are Psycho and Fritz, I have noticed that he picks some really beautiful women for the female roles. Mmm!)

Fritz the Cat (1972) - Gave it another chance as it's now one of my favourites from Ralph Bakshi. A funny adult animated film that paved the way for more adult animation.

    Anyone else?

Super Size Me (2004) - Caught a bit of it on CBC Newsworld. Apparently, they really love showing that documentary.

I had watched it a long time ago back in 7th Grade as a girl was using it for her speech. I still enjoy it, even though some bits of it are gross when you think about it.

If only they offered the experiment with the food during that showing...can't believe I'm saying that when I said some bits of the film were gross! You know I'm not thinking right when...

The Man Who Would Be King (1975) - I can definitely see why this is held so highly by Huston fans. A enjoyable take on the short story by Rudyard Kipling with Michael Caine and Sean Connery just running the show with Christopher Plummer in the background as the famous award winning author himself, Kipling.

Phobia (1980) - And from enjoyable to trash. While the twist did kinda get me, (it was late at night and I didn't even know that the tagline of the film basically gave out the whole plot since I wasn't even a thought when that film came out), this film was just plain dull. I did like the shots of Toronto in it though...and seeing Mrs. Mac from the original Black Christmas (1974). Now that was a surprise to see even both of them!

Annie (1982) - While it is a childhood favourite of mine, I do see why some folks aren't fans of it. While fun, this musical does go over the top sometimes. Heck, even as a kid, I kinda thought the "chase" scene on the train tracks was pushing things a bit.

The Dead (1987) - Finished watching this one tonight. While it wasn't my favourite from Huston, it was definitely a beautiful piece from him. The last ten minutes of this has to be the most beautiful ending he has produced in terms of his films. What a way to go out since this was John's swan song.

Even though I've found a few more of John Huston's films to watch on YouTube, I've basically seen the ten that I had decided on earlier for my dare. And all I have to say...thanks for the ride, John. It had a few bumps but it was a good one.

I'm not sure why but the one movie I can never see enough is The Wild Bunch (1969) arguably the best western ever made. What more can you ask having William Holden, Ernest Borgnine, Warren Oates, Ben Johnson, Edmund O'Brein & the black hat Robert Ryan. To top it a real bridge gets blown up spanning the Rio Grande.

Yikes! Better bring this thread back!

Aside from the films that I have been seeing for reviews, (and the ones that I will see seeing this week), I'll hopefully be seeing Pan's Labyrinth (2006)...I'm borrowing it from a friend of mine as I can't wait to settle down with it soon.

Well, after keeping my friend's DVD for so long, I told him that I would finally watch it, tonight.

    And that's what I did...

Do you want to know my response to Pan's Labyrinth.

    One word: Incredible!

For anyone who doesn't know, this film is basically a modern fairy tale on film, mixed with the tense and upsetting atmosphere of Francoist Spain, after the Civil War.

I didn't think this film would do much for me, but it did! I hope that copy that I saw at Sobeys is still there!

    What a masterpiece!
