    From CTV News:

Crosby returns to NHL with two goals, two assists

It didn't take long for Pittsburgh Penguins star centre Sidney Crosby to make his presence felt during his first NHL game in 10 months.

Only five minutes into Monday's highly anticipated game against the New York Islanders, Crosby picked up a loose puck in the neutral zone at full speed, zoomed past two defenders and put the puck in the top shelf. Later in the game, he added another goal and two assists.

It was a dramatic return for Crosby, who missed nearly a year from the NHL with post-concussion syndrome after a hit on last January.

While the hockey world has been awaiting Crosby's return with much concern, the Islanders played Crosby hard in the game's early going, including a couple of plays where the 24-year-old centre was knocked to the ice with hard hits.

Crosby had been cleared for contact six weeks ago, fuelling speculation his return to regular season play was imminent. The team ended the speculation with their announcement Sunday, with Penguins coach Dan Bylsma saying Crosby is both "excited" and "anxious" to return.

Earlier, even Crosby said he was nervous.

"I've been working hard over the last couple months but it's been a long time since I played a game so I don't really know what to expect. But I've tried to give myself every chance to be ready and to play the best I possibly can," said Crosby, who is sporting a moustache.

But he showed very few jitters from the moment he stepped on the ice, setting up two other goals later in the game.

Howard Bloom, the publisher of Sports Business News, says Crosby's return is huge for the game.

"It's as big a deal as it can be for hockey. Sidney Crosby is the face of hockey, and he is one of the more recognizable in the sports industry," Bloom said.

Crosby has not played a game since Jan. 5, when he was driven into the boards by Tampa Bay defenceman Victor Hedman. He had taken a hard hit four days before from the Capitals' David Steckel, which may have set him up for the concussion.

Crosby suffered for months with post-concussion symptoms that included dizziness, nausea and sensitivity to light and loud noises.

Physiologist Dr. Greg Wells who specializes in athletic performance training, says Crosby is still at risk of being hurt again if he gets hit.

"He has to be careful, but it looks like he's followed the right recovery protocol this time," he said.

Wells explained that Crosby was tested repeatedly over the last 10 months to see how much aerobic exertion he could endure without any concussion symptoms. Each time his symptoms returned, he had to stop, rest, and then start over again.

"We saw Sidney Crosby take almost 10 months to go through the process, and that's exactly what we're hoping that people are aware of now: that you don't have to rush back," Wells said. "And if you do rush back, you may be predisposing yourself to… a higher risk and greater likelihood of a severe injury."

As for worries that other players could make Crosby a target to keep him sidelined longer, Bloom says he doesn't believe that.

"They're not going to take a run at Sidney because he's injury-prone," Bloom said.

"But the Islanders and later in the week, the Senators, each of those teams has to wants to earn the two points against the penguins. They're not - and they should not - be holding back when they take on Sidney Crosby."

    Pronger's Out For The Season...

Wow, I really hope he recovers from this...

    From CTV News:

PHILADELPHIA -- The Philadelphia Flyers will have to find a way to keep winning games without captain Chris Pronger.

The NHL club announced Thursday that Pronger will miss the rest of the season and the playoffs with "severe post-concussion syndrome."

Veteran forward Scott Hartnell called that news "devastating."

"He's a presence in the room and on the ice," Hartnell said after the Flyers' 4-3 win in Montreal on Thursday. "He was a big factor in our run (to the Stanley Cup final) a couple of years ago. When he's in the lineup be brings a lot of intangibles. We're upset about it."

The decision came after 37-year-old Pronger was examined in Pittsburgh by doctors John Maroon and Mickey Collins, who also treated Penguins star Sidney Crosby.

"Chris will continue to receive treatments and therapy with the hope that he can get better," Flyers general manager Paul Holmgren said in a statement.

Pronger has missed the Flyers' last 11 games since coming down with what the team first described as a virus and later changed to post-concussion symptoms.

Without him, rookies Kevin Marshall and Marc-Andre Bourdon have filled in and it hasn't hurt so far as the Flyers have won seven games in a row and nine of their last 10.

The Flyers are also missing NHL scoring leader Claude Giroux and rookie Brayden Schenn to concussions.

Pronger is the team's top rearguard, a vocal leader and a nasty, physical presence on the ice.

But blue-liner Braydon Coburn said he will not be far away and can still be a positive influence even if he doesn't play.

"He'll be there for us," said Coburn. "He watches all the games. He'll text me and other guys. He's always got insight that he can give players.

"It's hard. I know he's probably going through a tough time. But he's a strong guy. He's been around the block. He is still a strong leadership voice in our dressing room, much like Lappy (Ian Laperriere) was last year.

"Especially with the young D-corps we have now, he'll be getting his voice in there with a lot of advice and encouragement."

The bruising defenceman also took a stick in the eye from Toronto's Mikhail Grabovski in late October that resulted in facial trauma and caused him to miss six games.

Pronger, who had knee surgery last month, has one goal and 11 assists in 13 games this season.

But the Flyers have managed to go 12-4-1 without him in the lineup this season.

"We made a lot of changes this summer and it resulted in us getting a lot deeper as a team," said Coburn. "We have a lot of young guys who are hungry to step up and fill gaps when guys go down. That has really benefited us."

Pronger, a Dryden, Ont., native, won gold medals with Canada at the 2002 and 2010 Olympics and won the Stanley Cup with the Anaheim Ducks in 2007.

He signed a seven year contract in 2009.

He has 157 goals and 541 assists in 1,167 career regular-season games in 18 seasons with Hartford, St. Louis, Edmonton, Anaheim and Philadelphia.

Pronger joins a long list of NHL players suffering from concussions or concussion-like symptoms this season. Crosby returned to action last month for the first time since early January, but has since suffered a setback and is again out of the Penguins lineup.

Ottawa Senators forward Milan Michalek, the league's top goalscorer, and Carolina Hurricanes sniper Jeff Skinner are also out with concussions.

Giroux, who has 39 points on the season, took an inadvertent knee to the head from teammate Wayne Simmonds in a game Saturday.

"Claude's status remains the same," Holmgren said. "He is out indefinitely."

DETROIT - Pavel Datsyuk scored with five seconds left to give the Detroit Red Wings 22nd consecutive home victory, 2-1 over the Nashville Predators on Friday night.

Three nights after breaking the NHL single-season record for consecutive home victories, the Red Wings tied Boston's multiple-season mark. The Bruins closed the 1929-30 season with 20 victories at home and won their first two the following season.

Detroit can break the record Sunday against San Jose.

Datsyuk beat Rinne with a high wrist shot from the slot after making a move to elude defenceman Ryan Suter. It was Datsyuk's 16th goal,

Datsyuk also had an assist on Johan Franzen's goal. Joey MacDonald made 20 saves, allowing only Nick Spaling's goal. Pekka Rinne stopped 29 shots.

Earlier in the day, Nashville acquired veteran defenceman Hal Gill and a conditional fifth-round pick in the 2013 draft from Montreal in exchange for a second-round pick in 2012 and forwards Blake Geoffrion and Robert Slaney.
